Flashcards are extremely helpful to learners of Spanish language (and any other language)! They are generally used to practice vocabulary, but can also be used to practice grammar and sentence structure. Flashcards are offered as printed material, free online, and in many language learning apps. This page lists traditional flashcards with a front and back, one side showing a word in Spanish, and the other side showing either a word or picture signifying the meaning.

If you are buying flashcards to use along with a self-study program (with books and/or CD’s) or a language learning software, note that these often come with flashcards. Even so, it’s helpful to have more than one set because different sets can appeal to different learning styles. For example, one set of flashcards might show the Spanish word on one side and an image on the other, but you might have a second set that show the Spanish word on one side, and the English translation on the other side. An app might use no words, but allow a user to play the Spanish pronunciation on one side, and flip the card to hear the English pronunciation of the equivalent word on the other side. One way might help an audio learner remember more quickly, while another set might tend to help a visual learner more quickly. Using both sets might be beneficial to learners to keep studying varied and fun.
